Boat on Fishing Tourism Plays a Key Economy for the District even though Agriculture and Fishing are the Major ones. Shrines, Places of Hindu Faith, Mosques forms the Spritual Tourism for the district. Annual Festivals and functions marks glory of the Year. Heritages like Tarangam padi Fort, Poompuhar speaks of the rich civilization of this land. 

Agriculture Field One of the major economies of the District, Agriculture contributes a higher share of Rice Production in the State. We have raised so many important agricultural crop in our District. Rice, Groundnut, Pulses, Gingelly, Sugarcane and Cotton.

Farmers cultivating same crop combined together and forming Commodity groups. The Group consists of a minimum of twenty farmers. Receiving pledge loan with 5% annual intrest only. They store the produce upto the period when the Market Price better. The Groups also sell their produce through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with whole sales traders directly and avoiding middle men, that leads to more profit to the farmers.

Post harvest Technology Training to Farmers

Varies post harvest technologies like storage pest management, type of storage methods. Usage of cold storage, Value addition, and Food Processing related trainings given to the commodity group farmers by the department.

DEMIC [Domestic and Export Market information Centre]

Price forecast of Various Agricultural Commodities and daily market price regarding vegetables and fruits are delivered through SMS by DEMIC to the farmers. So far around 2000 farmers in this district are getting daily market price and price forecast information by this centre.

Agmark Scheme is a Voluntary Scheme. The Central and State Government Combined together run this scheme. Agmark certification is given to various Agricultural commodities like Rice, Pulses, Wheat Atta, Vegetable Oils, Ghee, honey, Oil cake etc.

State Agmark Grading lab is functioning at nagapattinam. Various tests including adulteration screening are conducted at this lab. Agmark scheme ensures quality produce to the consumers.

National Mission on Food Processing

Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) and Government of Tamil Nadu have launched a new Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS)

National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP)

During 12th Five Year Plan to be implemented through States. The basic objective of NMFP is decentralization of implementation of Ministry's schemes, which will lead to substantial participation of State Governments. The proposed NMFP contemplates establishment of a National Mission as well as corresponding Missions in the State and District level. This scheme is proposed to be implemented as a new centrally sponsored scheme with the financial assistance in the ratio of 75:25 by Government of India and State Government.

    Objectives of NMFP
    1. To emphasize the significance of Food Processing for enhancing farm productivity and farmer's income in the country.
    2. To assist the State Government in creating requisite synergy between their agricultural plans and development of Food Processing Sector.
    3. To assist the State Government in addressing both institutional and infrastructural gaps along the value chains and thus create efficient supply chain for farm produce.
    4. To promote initiatives for skill development, training and entrepreneurship which would meet needs of both post-harvest management and Food Processing Industry
    5. To assist Food Processing Industry to meet requisite standards in terms of food safety laws and market demand, both domestic and international.

    Since NMFP is being implemented by Tamil Nadu Government w.e.f 01.04.2012, all concerned who would be seeking financial assistance from the above mentioned Schemes may submit their new applications (as per XII plan Scheme guidelines) to the State Mission Director through the District Food Processing Mission Committee. In nagapattinam district food processing mission committee is formed and first meeting conducted on 15.11.2012 under the Chairmanship of District Collector.

1. Scheme for Technology Up-gradation / Setting up / Modernization /Expansion of food processing Industries 25% of the cost of plant & machinery and technical Civil Works subject to a maximum of Rs.50 lakhs in general areas.
2. Scheme for supporting cold chain facilities and Reefer Vehicles for other than Horticulture Products. 50% the total cost of plant and machinery and technical civil works in General areas subject to a maximum of Rs.10 Crore.
Scheme for Human Resource Development (HRD)
1 Creation of Infrastructure facilities for Running Degree / Diploma / Certificate Courses in food Processing technology. Maximum eligible amount of Rs.75.00 lakhs for creation of infrastructure like technical/academic books laboratory equipments, Pilot plant etc.,
2 Entrepreneurship Development Programme (Entrepreneur Development Programme) Upto Rs.2 lakhs per Entrepreneur Development Programme will be provided.
3 Food Processing Training Centre (FPTC) Single Product Line Centre: Upto a ceiling Rs.4.00 Lakhs for (for any one group of processing Fixed capital costs and Rs.2.00 lakh processing activities) as revolving seed capital. Multi Product Line Centre: Upto a ceiling of Rs.11.00 lakhs for (for more than one group of fixed capital costs and Rs.4.00 lakh processing activities) as revolving seed capital
Scheme for Promotional Activities
1 Organizing Seminar/Workshops 50% of the cost. Subject to a maximum of Rs.3.00 Lakhs.
2 Conducting Studies/ Surveys 50% of the cost. Subject to a maximum of Rs.3.00 Lakhs.
3 Support to Exhibition/Fairs The quantum of assistance depends on the merits of proposal.
